Only way you would need a new end on the drive shaft is if the stud on the drive shaft end for the carden joint was bad. This is assuming the 2004's are similar to the 2001's. Some one may do that to make it easier to get back in but it's not all that hard with out it and I would venture to say most of us here don't mark it. The reason new u joints are stiff most of the time as seen by many on this forum and others is usually because the G-clips are too thick.
